Flash fiction has many characteristics that make the prose form work. The main characteristics are: Flash Why would writers sacrifice adding entertaining and perhaps crucial details to write their stories as flash fiction? Stories in this form are written with as few words as possible to invoke the response the writer desires. Flash fiction is well received is because there are no wasted words. Every word has meaning and purpose. The condensed format does not allow for winding plot sequences or frivolous descriptions. This abruptness makes for a crisp reading experience. Plot-Driven As short as they are, flash fiction stories are plot-driven and have a beginning, middle and end. The entire plot is told in a few words. Flash fiction writers must focus solely on what story they want to express in order to pen the entire sequence of events. The entire plot unfolding quickly also adds to the thrill and anticipation of the plot. Undeveloped Characters Flash fiction stories usually do not contain many characters or character development. As the form is plot-driven, characters are usually secondary to the series of events happening in the story. Characters are not developed for readers to become familiar with them. Instead, the descriptions, thoughts, and actions of the characters are used to drive the plot forward. CLIMATIC ending Though the story is a complete sequence of events, flash fictions usually end at their climaxes. That means stories usually end with a plot twist or an unresolved conflict. Unresolved stories force readers to think about what the story is trying to convey. This puts readers in the active and immersive role of playing detective. Do you know any flash fiction stories that do not end at the climax? Which genre do you think works best when written as flash fiction?
